Since our last blog we have made the decision to turn the project into an interactive installation with elements of performance. Centred on the gift and moneyless exchange, the installation has been made completely moneylessly, and it is coming along beautifully. We decided not to create a whole performance about the gift, as it is an abstract notion with many qualities and definitions, and we wanted the audience to be able to experience our idea of the gift, rather than passively observe it.
We have created ‘The Exchange’, a large cube made entirely of the clothes and material we have been gifted, which will be the main installation element of the piece. To gain access to ‘The Exchange’ we ask each audience member to gift an item of clothing to the performance (you will have the option of getting it back if you wish) so start thinking about what you want to bring.
Over the last couple of weeks we have spent many hours collecting clothes, cutting fabric, sewing strips of material, assembling ‘The Exchange’, discussing gift theory, walking everywhere, making signs and tags using recycled cardboard, and having the occasional hackie sack kick-about in the sun (when it’s been so kind as to grace us with its presence!).
We are on track and looking forward to our tech rehearsal, dress runs and the final performances. Here are some photos of our last few weeks’ activities:
